Miss Gretel came to the rescue as a stray in San Antonio. She was found with a large abdominal mass, and had a major surgery to remove her spleen, have her spayed and repair a hernia. She recovered like a champ!! She had a minor ear infection as well, but she completed her meds and has been cleared for adoption by a veterinarian.

Gretel is a sweet, wire-haired dachshund, who's thought to be about 8-9 years old and weighs around 16 pounds. She loves to snuggle on the sofa with her foster family, but she also loves to nap in her own doggie bed. She is pretty vocal about doorbells, thunder and sirens...but she doesn't act fearful.  She has a great appetite and also loves treats and toys!

Gretel would be best-suited in a home with one other senior dog or possibly as an only pet. Her ideal owner will be okay bathing her regularly to keep her wire coat healthy, and will have no issue giving Miss Gretel an ear cleaning during bath time( with her medicated wash) to prevent any future ear infections. She is not fond of sharing her food/water bowls and she has been known to growl at dogs who want to take her food. She has never been aggressive, but a new owner should be mindful that Gretel has her own "language" when she feels threatened.

Otherwise, Gretel is just an absolute doll...brave, smart, curious, sweet as pie... Considering her traumatic beginnings, she has come a long way and has a lot of love to give!!
